War and peace
Over het thema: Whether we like it or not, wars are focal points in human history. They may totally disrupt both the lives of individuals and the fabric of societies. Still, people sometimes feel that war is sometimes justified or even necessary. On what basis is warfare considered to be legitimate? Historians, political scientists, philosophers, law scholars, all contribute to debates on this question.
In this theme we will research the effects of representations of peace and war. Even if we follow the news closely, and know all about contemporary or past wars, what do we really know? How is our knowledge of what war is, influenced by representations and debates in media, monuments and art? What is the role of media and of the political or economic functions of memory and representations of war?
